4th DenkfabrEthik on the Topic: Ethics of Automated Driving
Event for the Ethical, Social, and Societal Discourse of Digitalization
Gain in safety or additional danger? Gain in quality of life or ethical problem? On November 13, 2017, the established think tank Ethics met on the topic of automated driving. The “Vorreiter” project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, is researching the concept of steering gestures. In concrete terms, this means that the driver makes a gesture at the steering wheel and the car then executes a maneuver. The aim of the project is to explore and implement intuitive gestures for all user groups as far as possible. These will then be experienced in two real vehicles and two driving simulators. The gestures can be executed on a classic steering wheel, but joysticks, touchpads or similar input devices are also conceivable and will be explored.
In the context of the DenkfabrEthik the social and ethical questions, which are the starting point of this project, were thematized and discussed. In short presentations, various aspects were highlighted, including:
- What is the current legal situation?
- What ethical issues arise in this topic?
- Which groups can particularly benefit from automated driving?
Together with several panel speakers and the DenkfabrEthik advisory board, consisting of representatives of interest groups, politics, and business, a lively discussion with interested citizens took place, with explicitly people with disabilities, younger, and older participants having their say.
