The aim of the project is to make the education of teachers at RWTH Aachen University into an integral part of the university, where dealing with heterogeneity becomes a systematically applied principle of research and teaching. A number of measures are being taken in response to central deficits in current teacher training at RWTH Aachen University, which a wide variety of actors have identified in a systematic analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of teacher training. Staff from the IAW – Institut für Arbeitswissenschaft (Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics) – are involved in two projects here.
Quantitative Improvement of the Supply of Teachers in Required Fields
This project focuses on the conception and implementation of measures to acquire students to train as teachers at grammar schools, comprehensive schools, and vocational colleges in those subjects which are in great demand. To this end, it is first necessary to identify and describe current and future fields of demand in the teaching profession. In a second step, it will be examined to what extent the positive acquisition experiences gained in the industrial-technical vocational subjects can be transferred to other high demand areas in the teaching profession at secondary schools. Since 2013, RWTH Aachen University has been offering students in a Bachelor of Engineering program at a technical college, an accompanied and coordinated transition to the Master of Education degree. Whether and how this acquisition model can be transferred to the degree programs of other faculties is a key question in the project.
Design of the Practical Semester for the Teaching Profession at Vocational Colleges
The aim of the working group “Practical Semester in Industrial-Technical Vocational Specializations at Vocational Colleges” is to design the content and curriculum of the practical semester for the teaching profession at vocational colleges. To this end, representatives of all three institutions involved in teacher training work together – the university, the ZfsL – Zentrum für schulpraktische Lehrerausbildung (Centre for Practical Teacher Training) in the Aachen training region, and the corresponding schools in the Aachen training region. To promote coordinated training content and its implementation at all three training locations, the working group developed two formats that promote an exchange between the aforementioned partners. In addition, the working group "Practical Semester in Industrial-Technical Vocational Specializations at Vocational Colleges" supports the development and implementation of effective feedback instruments to optimize the practical semester both on an individual, study-centered level and on an institutional level.
Sub-projects in the project Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung (Quality Offensive Teacher Education) at RWTH Aachen University: Design of the practical semester in industrial-technical vocational specifications and measures for the acquisition of suitable students in high demand subject areas.
