Developing Competencies Integrated Into the Work Process for Process Management

Based on recorded, described, and systematized work processes of skilled workers, the project PM-Kompare developed and implemented concepts for process-integrated skill development in companies. In addition, a distance learning course to prepare for the further education examination to become a certified process manager in production technology was developed, implemented, and evaluated.
In the context of Industry 4.0, a decisive factor for the economic success of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector lies in the design of effective and efficient production processes. As a result, complex tasks of production organization such as the design and optimization of manufacturing processes performed by skilled workers, are becoming increasingly important. However, there is a lack of suitable didactic concepts and training courses to promote the competencies needed for production organization tasks.
The project “PM-Kompare – Für das Prozessmanagement Kompetenzen arbeitsprozessintegriert entwickeln” (PM-Kompare – Developing competencies for process management in a work-process integrated manner) pursued the goal of developing instruments for sustainable work-process integrated skills development of skilled workers in small and medium-sized enterprises in the area of process management.
The focal points of the project include:
- Eliciting, describing and systematizing the work processes of skilled workers in production organization
- Development and implementation of concepts for work-process integrated skills development in companies
- Development, implementation and evaluation of a distance learning course to prepare for the continuing education examination to become a certified process manager in production technology
For the development of suitable instruments for the promotion of skills in the production organization, qualification research studies were carried out in the sense of competence-based didactics. Normative aspects of curriculum design were ascertained by means of a classification analysis, and empirically relevant work processes in production were analyzed and used as a basis for the development of instruments for the promotion of skills.
The tools developed meet the challenge of promoting skills in company processes. For this purpose, a theoretical model for the promotion of reflexive ability to act in company work tasks was taken as a basis. With recourse to the results of the work process analyses, a situational approach is opened up to the learners. The skills are promoted in a structured way in typical work situations. This reflective learning is to be made possible by linking formal and informal learning. Two instruments for promoting skills were developed for this purpose: A teaching-learning concept for dealing with situational tasks and a portfolio concept to support the processing and documentation of company projects.
The concept developed for a distance learning course to prepare for the advanced training examination was implemented as a marketable offer within the framework of the joint project PM-Kompare. It was carried out with 18 participants in the period from April 2015 to October 2016. The teaching-learning concept for processing the situational tasks and the portfolio concept were also tested and continuously evaluated with regard to their suitability and their ability to promote learning in relation to the desired development of skills.
