A Data Space for Sustainable Forestry

The project “CO2For-IT” has officially announced its launch, and a two-day project kick-off meeting with all participating project partners is scheduled for next week in Dortmund.

The aim of the research project is the comprehensive implementation of sustainable and climate-positive wood value creation in the forestry and timber industry. The use of the "Forest Data Space" will enable monitoring and optimization of value creation processes and networks.

Within the project, the Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics, IAW in short, will concentrate on the human-centred design of this digital transformation as well as the investigation of psychological stress and strain in forestry work. In addition, examinations will be conducted on usability within the data space, focusing on aspects such as the accessibility and presentation of information.

With “CO2For-IT” important steps will be taken towards a more sustainable timber industry, accompanied by a human-centred design and user-friendliness.

Next to the two RWTH institutes, the Institute for Man-Machine Interaction, also called MMI, and the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering, WZL in short, additional project partners are: Materna Information & Communications SE, the RIF Institut für Forschung und Transfer e. V., Rhenus Forest Logistics GmbH & Co. KG and HSM Hohenloher Spezial Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG as well as the Forstliches Forschungs- und Kompetenzzentrum Gotha from ThüringenForst and the Kuratorium für Waldarbeit und Forsttechnik e. V.,shortened KWF.
Further cooperation is carried out with foldAI and iFOS GmbH.

The research and development project is funded by the BMWK – Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action) with the funding number 01MN23017C.
